At the 85th Annual Convention in
1986, a Resolution was introduced by
S.E.S. Dean Simon Cordeiro to establish
a S.E.S. Museum for the collection,
preservation and display of items of
historical value to the S.E.S. Supreme
Council and its Subordinate Councils.
Museum items of interest on
Portuguese Culture and History could
also be displayed either on a loan basis
or as permanent acquisitions.
The Resolution was adopted and the
Museum was authorized by the Supreme
Board of Directors.
Simon Cordeiro was born on January 8,
1906 in Sao Jorge, Azores. Simon
Cordeiro was married to Lucille O.
Cordeiro and had a son, William P.
Cordeiro. Mr. Cordeiro was a Laborer. He
joined Council "Fé no Espírito Santo"
No. 13 of San Rafael on February 7, 1926
as a charter member. Served as Supreme
Director. Installed as Supreme President
in Rio Vista in 1930. During his
administration, Mr. Cordeiro organized
Council "Boa Esperança" No 21 of Newman
on September 8, 1931 and Council
"Turlock" No. 22 of Turlock on October
27, 1931. Mr. Cordeiro was the first
Chairman of the S.E.S. Museum Committee
and was very instrumental to its
organization. He also served on many
other committees. During his
administration, 136 members were
initiated. The Society had assets in the
amount of $25,314.59.
Mr. Cordeiro passed away March 1,
1995.
In 1995, at it's 100th Anniversary
Celebration, the Supreme Council
dedicated the Museum in memory of Simon
Cordeiro who was the founder of the
museum. The Annual Session was held in
the City of Santa Clara.
The S.E.S. Museum is open Monday
through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
